On November 24, 2015, the Madison Police Department responded to Central Tavern, 300 Block of Mulberry, in reference to a subject with a firearm. Caller was concerned because the subject was possibly intoxicated.
Ptl. Craig Hahn arrived on scene and was told the subject entered a van in the parking lot across from Central Tavern. Ptl. Hahn approached the van and observed the subject, later identified as Brian K. Hammond Age 40 of Louisville Kentucky, flee to the rear of the van. Ptl. Dylan Barnes, Lt. Wayne Phillips, and Sgt. Wayne Phillips attempted to make contact with Brian, but received no response.
According to witnesses Brian entered Central Tavern with a firearm in his waistband. Due to the safety concern a perimeter was secured around the vehicle and the Madison Police Emergency Response Team and Madison Detectives were called to the scene.
Officers made several attempts to have Brian exit the vehicle, but he refused. After refusing, Madison Police ERT used chemical agents inside the vehicle, but Brian still refused to exit. Detective Tyson Eblen was able to speak to Brian by phone. Detective Eblen was able to negotiate with Brian to exit the vehicle. During a search of the vehicle officers located two replica Pellet Guns.
No one was injured in the incident. Brian was placed under arrest without further incident.
