Rising Sun Police Chief David Hewitt issued a press release in response to one of his officers being arrested on 13 felony charges.
Hewitt says as a result of the arrest, the Rising Sun Police Department will conduct an internal investigation into the incident and take the appropriate disciplinary actions according tot he City Personnel Policy, Police Department Standard Operating Procedures and per specific state statutes.
Hewitt says Officer Colen is currently relieved from work in an unrelated workman’s comprehensive claim that occurred last month.
The Rising Sun city attorney and the Board of Public Works will assist in reviewing the situation. Once a determination on the workman’s comp issue is resolved, the department will move forward with disciplinary proceedings.
Hewitt says it is assumed at this point that Officer Colen will be suspended without pay during the duration of the criminal proceedings and then be in a holding pattern until the criminal matter is resolved. At that time, a final determination of Officer Colen’s employment status with the police department will be made. Hewitt says that determination could lead to termination.
The chief says this is obviously a very difficult time, not only for Officer Colen and his family, but for the other officers on the police department, the City Officials and investigators. Chief Hewitt says everyone involved is saddened that the investigation led to this point.
