Around 4:46 AM on Saturday morning, 8/15/15, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a fight in progress at 4012 S. 400 W. Hanover.
Upon arrival, officers were met in the driveway by occupants of the residence. The occupants reported that a family member, later identified as 43 year old John C. Unsworth, of Hanover, was out of control and had physically assaulted each of them.
During this time, the subject appeared on scene, and charged toward officers in a highly agitated manner. The subject was given verbal commands to stop, but continued his aggressive charge toward deputies. When the subject ignored the verbal commands a deputy deployed his TASER, and administered multiple cycles, however the subject continued his aggression toward officers. The deputies utilized a progressive level of force, all of which were ineffective. This left one of deputies no choice but to use deadly force to stop the subject’s violent actions as the deputy feared for his own life, his fellow officer and family members on scene.
The 43 year old male was transported to KDH-ER by EMS, where he was pronounced dead.
An independent investigation is being conducted by the Indiana State Police. The deputies involved have been put on administrative leave, which is standard in any officers involved shooting incident.
More information may be released as the investigation progresses.
