The Switzerland County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fatal accident that occurred shortly before midnight at the intersection of Markland Pike and Bennett Road.
Upon the arrival of deputies, they found a car had left the roadway and struck a tree.
The vehicle was occupied by four juveniles. One of the occupants, a 13 year old female, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Switzerland County Coroner’s office. Another was entrapped and had to be extracated from the vehicle by members of the Jeff-Craig and East Enterprise Fire Departments. That individual, and another occupant were transported from the scene by Air Methods and University of Cincinnati Air Care. The fourth occupant was taken by ambulance to the hospital.
Deputies continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
Out of respect for the families, and the fact that all the victims are juveniles, we will not be reporting the name of the deceased nor the other occupants in the vehicle.
Anyone with information that may help in the investigation, please contact the sheriff’s office at 812.427.3636.

The Switzerland County Sheriff’s department worked a serious accident last night on Markland Pike. Switzerland County dispatch could not give any information surrounding the incident, however, the daily call log supplied by the sheriff’s office to the station every morning says deputies responded around midnight to a death in the 6700 block of Markland Pike. Numerous reports on facebook suggest there were several injuries with at least two people flown by air care from the scene. We will update this story once the sheriff’s office administration does a press release later today.
