On Monday (12/3/18), the Ohio County Sheriff’s Department, Rising Sun Police Department, and the Indiana State Police began investigating a two vehicle head on crash in the 5000 Block of West State Road 56 that sent an Ohio County woman to a Cincinnati hospital.
The initial investigation indicated that a 2014 Chevrolet van being driven by Rickey F. Cheesman Jr., age 46, Middletown, OH, was traveling westbound on State Road 56 when the vehicle crossed the center line into the path of an eastbound 2012 Toyota passenger car being driven by Betty J. Massong, age 80, Rising Sun, IN. The vehicles collided nearly head on in the eastbound lane of State Road 56.
Massong’s vehicle exited the road before coming to a stop. Cheesman’s vehicle came to rest in the roadway. Massong was transported to a Cincinnati area hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Cheesman was not injured in the crash.
Toxicology tests are pending however drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be factors.
The Ohio County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the crash with the assistance of Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, Indiana State Police-Versailles Crash Reconstruction Team.
The investigation is ongoing.
State Road 56 was closed for nearly five hours for crash investigation and cleanup.
Officers at the scene were assisted by Ohio County EMS, Rising Sun Fire Department, Dis-Bec Towing, and TNT Towing.
