The community of Rabbit Hash is mourning the loss of their former mayor.
Lucy Lou, a beautiful border collie, served her post as the unofficial mayor of the small river community in Boone County from 2008-2016. She passed over rainbow bridge on Monday (9/10) at the age of 12 human years.
And, while a lot of folks may scoff and laugh at how “preposterous” the whole idea that a dog was the mayor of Rabbit Hash…I got to thinking about how much we could learn from Lucy Lou and from current mayor Brynn, a pit bull terrier…especially in light of the current political climate and society in general.
I think we could learn from these two…to enjoy life, in spite of all of its ups and downs; to be kind to one another and realize that someone may just need a good friend today to help them along; that mud-slinging should only occur when you’re trying to bury a bone or your toys; to smile, not because someone told you to, but because you’re with friends and neighbors; that it really doesn’t matter what color you are on the outside, how rich or poor you are, or how big your house is…we’re all alike on the inside and our graves are all the same size; and that there is absolutely nothing better than a good hot dog (maybe rolled in the dirt) and belly scratch…enjoy the simple things of life and don’t sweat the small stuff.
I’m sure Lucy Lou and Brynn are like my dogs…you may have to correct them from time to time, and they give you that heartbreaking look and tuck their tails…you may accidentally step on them and hurt them…but they’re quick to forgive and be loving on you within just a few minutes. Yep, I’m sure we could learn a lesson from the former mayor, and while you may think it’s crazy to call her that…imagine a world comprised of the policies she had while in office…official or unofficial…she was the mayor, and it’s been a long time since we could say this…a politician we can and should look up to.
Rest easy girl.
