A Gallatin County crash claimed the life of a Switzerland County man.
Around 9:54am on Monday (January 8, 2018), the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Department responded to a series of crashes on US 42 near the Markland Dam.
A pickup truck headed east toward Warsaw, hit a patch of ice and spun out and went off the left side of the roadway toward the river and struck a small tree. The driver of the pickup was uninjured and got out of her truck, she then heard a large crashing sound and turned to see a bobtail semi truck had slid on the same patch of ice and went off the left side of the roadway, overturning and smashing into a large tree.
Sheriff Josh Neale says the semi slid on the ice and spun out, striking a van driving west in the back end, causing the van to spin out onto the shoulder of the road. After striking the van, the truck tilted onto it’s side and struck a large tree. Limbs on the tree busted through the windshield of the truck, killing the driver, identified as Lhassane Salmi, age 45, of Switzerland County. Salmi was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Gallatin County Coroner’s office.
There were no other injuries in the series of crashes.
The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Gallatin County EMS, Warsaw Fire, the Gallatin County Coroner’s office and the Kentucky State Police.
