The Indiana Department of Transportation plans to open State Road 62 at a slide mitigation site east near Friendship in Ripley Countyand close the highway at a second slide location in Dearborn County south of Dillsboro. These operations are tentatively scheduled to occur this Friday (OCT 27), weather permitting.
INDOT officials advise motorists to continue using the existing S.R. 62 detour—via S.R. 129 and U.S. Highway 50—to circumvent the Dearborn County closure.
Beaty Construction, the state’s contractor for this $5 million slide correction project, will address embankment erosion concerns at side-by-side sites along S.R. 62 located 3.46 miles east of the Dearborn-Ripley County line. Its crews plan to moderate the slopes and establish erosion control measures before reopening the roadway for winter driving.
In the spring, mechanically stabilized aggregate retaining walls will be put in place to retain the twin embankments along S.R. 62 which measure 315 feet and 495 feet in width. At that time, wire mesh held in place by geogrid straps and back-filled with stone will secure the regraded slopes.
