September 28, 2017, at 11:11 PM the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, Madison Police Department, and Indiana State Police responded to 3056 Cameron Court reference a gunshot victim. Upon arrival, officers received gun fire from the occupant of 3056 Cameron Court, later identified as David Michael Head age 24. The initial gunshot victim, Kevin L. Royalty 24, Madison, Indiana, was able walk across the street from 3056 Cameron Court to seek help. The gunshot victim was accompanied by a female and small child who were in, or near the Head residence when the shooting occurred.
After firing several rounds at the responding officers, Head retreated into his residence where an additional gunshot was heard. The Madison Emergency Response Team was summoned to the scene, and made entrance into the residence. David Head was found deceased, inside the residence, from a self inflicted gunshot wound. No police officer discharged their weapons during this incident. A survey of the area, once the scene was deemed safe, revealed several rounds had been discharged by Head into a surrounding residence, and several vehicles. One of the vehicle’s shot was being driven by Deputy Sheriff Linton Spry, as he arrived on scene. Deputy Spry, along with other officers and occupants of the area, were not injured.
Kevin Royalty sustained several gunshot wounds to the upper portion of his body, and was stat flown to Louisville, Kentucky. Indiana State Police Crime Scene Tech Merit Toomey is assisting the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department with this ongoing investigation.
