The Indiana Department of Transportation is scheduling Southeast District maintenance personnel for chip seal operations next Monday through Wednesday (AUGUST 9, 10 & 11) on State Road 156 between Vevay and Patriot in Switzerland County. 34 lane miles of highway adjacent to the Ohio River—between S.R. 56 and S.R. 250—will benefit from the surface treatment. A segment of S.R. 156 near Markland Dam and Belterra Casino will not be affected.
Chip seal applications coat highways with liquid asphalt—sealing pavement cracks and protecting the roadbed from moisture intrusion and damaging ultraviolet rays. Small chips of limestone choke the asphalt and reestablish a proper coefficient of friction for safer driving.
INDOT officials advise motorists to give crews plenty of room to work and to drive slowly with ample space between vehicles on freshly treated pavements.
