Editorial by Owner and General Manager Adam Griffin:
Well, here we go again…I want to start this off by saying, no, screaming this…I HATE CANCER! It has claimed yet another of one of our local communities’ iconic residents.
You ask any student who walked the halls of Rising Sun Middle School from 1989 to 2015 and you’ll get a long list of stories about their favorite science teacher…Denny Carrigan or “Mr. C.” to his students. The news came this morning that Mr. C. lost his battle with cancer after bravely fighting it for the last few years. And the news comes and breaks hearts of the countless students who Denny’s life touched.
I met Mr. C. when I moved to Rising Sun schools in 7th grade…and truth be told, I am not alone in saying that I still have my PVC telescope we made in class. Nor am I alone in the stories, numerous at that, of Mr. C. swinging from the I-beams in the classroom to get from one side to the other. Mr. C. invested himself in us. He made it his goal in life to mold us and shape us into upstanding and independent human beings, all while teaching us the things we needed to know about science.
Then there’s the sports aspect. Mr. C. led the Shiners to a basketball sectional championship in 1998 and coached the boys through the 2001 season. Not to mention the years of coaching a being a part of the track and cross country teams.
Denny retired from teaching at the end of the 2015 school year after being diagnosed with cancer.
His smile, love for life and joyful spirit were contagious. And those of us who were honored to sit in his classroom, will forever be grateful for the blessing we all called “Mr. C.”
Bev, Molly, Abby, Toby, CJ and Joe – again, we are so thankful for you sharing Denny with us. We are all better people for having known him.
A memorial service for Denny will take place at 7pm on Friday, May 26th in the gymnasium of Rising Sun High School. Visitation will be from 5pm until the time of service in the gym.
