On Saturday evening (2/3/17) at around 7:30pm, Rising Sun Police Officers were dispatched to Tandy’s IGA to investigate a man in a black vehicle, screaming and yelling a woman’s name.
The vehicle left the parking lot before officers arrived and headed north on State Rte 56. Ohio County Deputies were notified that the vehicle had struck a concrete wall that separates the parking lot between Tandy’s and the Dollar General, and had also struck Tandy’s IGA building.
Deputies located the vehicle just North of Rising Sun on SR 56 and attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle. Deputies observed smoke coming from the vehicle and observed the right front tire to come loose from the rim. The vehicle continued on SR 56 North on its three remaining tires and rim. Deputies initiated a vehicle pursuit.
Ohio County dispatchers called ahead to have Aurora Police set up to intercept. APD units set up stop sticks on the Laughery Creek Bridge at French, which were successful in deflating the remaining three tires on the vehicle. The vehicle traveled a short distance before coming to a stop.
The driver, identified as Randy K. Lester, was taken into custody without incident. Lester agreed to submit to a certified chemical test and was taken to Dearborn County Hospital ER, where a blood draw was performed. Lester’s blood test results are pending.
The total length of the pursuit was approximately 4.2 miles.
Lester was charged with:
Failure to Stop After Accident (Property Damage) a Class B Misdemeanor,
Operating While Intoxicated (Endangerment) a Class A Misdemeanor, and
Resisting Law Enforcement (Flee in Vehicle) a Level 6 Felony
The Ohio County Sheriff’s Department would like to thank the Rising Sun Police Department and Aurora Police Department for their assistance.
It should be noted all suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
