Editorial by Owner/General Manager Adam Griffin:
It seems like every time I write such a story, I use a lot of the same words to describe the individual. And, this time, is no different.
Switzerland County’s students and friends are mourning the loss of our long-time friend and, talking with several of his students, one of the most-loved teachers to ever grace the hallways of Switzerland County schools.
Mr. Jim Allison passed away on Wednesday at Ridgewood Health Campus in Lawrenceburg at the age of 74.
In small communities, it’s usually harder to fit in when you’re not originally from them. Jim and Shelby Allison are the exception to that. I don’t suppose there’s ever been anyone who was “adopted”, if you will, into a community’s family, like the Allison’s.
Jim and Shelby moved to Switzerland County in 1977 where he began his career with the Switzerland County School Corp. In his 22 years at Switzerland County Schools, Jim served as teacher and as principal at Switzerland County High School and Switzerland County Elementary School. Jim also coached track and basketball, and enjoyed coaching football as well.
I talked to several of Jim’s students…and each and every one of them have said, “he was my absolute favorite teacher”. It’s not hard to believe that. Jim retired in 1999, and you could find him, several days a week, with Shelby, eating breakfast at AJ’s. I loved when I went in to get my food, being able to sit and chat, usually for a lot longer than I intended!
If there’s one thing I’m certain of, Jim was absolutely one of the greatest Switzerland County was ever privileged to adopt.
Jim and Shelby were married 51 years and had two daughters, Tammy and Lori. And to the three of you and your family, I again say “Thank you!” Thank you for sharing Jim with us! No doubt that a lot of Jim will live on in the lives of the students and countless lives he touched.
Visitation will be on Tuesday (6/14) from 5:00-8:00pm at Haskell and Morrison Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be on Wednesday (6/15) at 11:00am at the funeral home. Pastor Mike Jones will have the honor of officiating.
Jim will be buried in the Florence Cemetery.
Memorials are requested to the Mr. James Edwin “Jim” Allison Endowment Fund % Community Foundation of Switzerland County.
