On Tuesday, June 7, 2016, the City of Madison Police Department received a call of an auto accident in the area of Irish Hollow and State Road 7. Captain Rick Mundt, Lieutenant Dan Slygh, Senior Patrolman Jeremy Cox and Patrolman Brandon Decker responded to the scene. Officers located a black Mitsubishi Eclipse that had ran off the roadway and came to rest on its side. No driver or occupants were located at the scene.
Cox noticed footprints in the grass leading away from the scene that headed south toward Main Street. Cox followed these tracks through Springdale Cemetery, but lost them as the subject entered Clifty Creek.
Mundt found information in the vehicle that contained a name and address on it. The name was Elijah J. Steele and the address was in the 800 block of West Main Street. Officers located Elijah at that residence. Officers noticed what appeared to be a bump with redness on Elijah’s forehead.
Elijah claimed to have been asleep and didn’t know anything about his vehicle being wrecked. Officers noticed his keys were right next to him and his boots were soaked and covered in wet grass. Officers noticed additional fresh injuries on Elijah including scrapes and minor lacerations.
After being asked additional questions about the accident, Elijah admitted to being the driver and only occupant of the vehicle. He was issued a citation for leaving the scene of a property damage accident.
