Switzerland County Sheriff Nathan Hughes and Switzerland County Jail Commander Luann Shaefer released information on jail performance through the first quarter of 2016.
Commander Shaefer reports the jail has been able to cut food cost for the inmates by nearly half of what has been paid. It costs the jail around $.60 per day for meals. That has allowed a huge savings for the county.
Sheriff Hughes authorized Shaefer to begin contacting other counties in the region whose jails are beyond capacity to offer housing. Sheriff Hughes says the rate per inmate from other counties is $35 per day.
Commander Shaefer says that Ohio County has had over 100 inmates in the jail through the first quarter of the year and as of this report had 21 incarcerated. One other county, Decatur County, had responded to the offer to house inmates and sent 10 to Switzerland County to be housed.
As of this report, the jail is making Switzerland County $1085 per day with out of county housing of inmates.
The totals of cleared revenue (after meals) the jail has brought in for the first quarter are:
Sheriff Hughes says that a total revenue of over $47,000 the jail is bringing into the general fund for Switzerland County.
Commander Shaefer says the jail has also started Drug Intervention Programs for both male and female inmates, and has also started work crews.
