On Thursday, January 14, 2016, the Madison Police Department was contacted by the Harrison County (Indiana) Sheriff’s Department, requesting assistance with locating three suspects who were wanted for questioning in a double shooting. The Harrison County Sheriff’s Department had information the suspects were in an apartment in Presidential Estates. It was further relayed the suspects were to be considered armed and dangerous and were in possession of a sawed-off shotgun and a handgun.
After a lengthy surveillance investigation, led by MPD Detective Lieutenant Ty Eblen and Chief Deputy Dave Thomas of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, it was learned two of the suspects were in a vehicle in the area. Officers observed the suspect vehicle pull into a parking space in the Walmart parking lot.
Officers of the Madison Police Department and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department were able to pin the vehicle in. A female subject, later identified as Tara Dawn Snawder Vanwinkle (31) of DePauw, Indiana, was apprehended immediately. A male subject, later identified as Travis Dean Fentress (33) of Corydon, Indiana, attempted to flee the area on foot. Officers pursued on foot and Officer Josh Cochran of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department deployed his TASER and took Fentress into custody.
Warrants were confirmed for Vanwinkle and Fentress and both were transported to the Jefferson County Jail without further incident. Local charges have not been filed at this time.
The vehicle was determined to be stolen and was towed from the scene. Indiana State Police Crime Scene technicians were contacted to process the vehicle. No weapons were located.
