On August 30, 2016, the Madison Police Department responded to a call in reference to a welfare check at 813 West Second Street. The caller requested police to check on the welfare of George S. Reece AGE 48, who was possibly inside the residence. Ptl. Shawn Scudder was aware that Reece had an active warrant for Escape and to approach with caution. Also a person familiar with Reece indicated that he may be in possession of a firearm and made comments he did not want to be go back to jail. Based on the circumstances, the Madison Police Department set up a perimeter around the residence in attempt to apprehend Reece.
When officers arrived Reece would not come to the door of the residence. Detective Tyson Eblen was contacted and began negotiating with Reece, who refused to make contact with police. Madison Police Emergency Response Team also arrived and Commander Sgt. Ben McKay began operations and plans to enter the residence.
At one point Reece opened the front door to residence and yelled toward officers. Reece then shut the door. Madison Police ERT removed the front door of the residence and placed a chemical agent inside the residence in attempt to force Reece out of the residence. Reece did not respond. Detective Eblen continued to make attempts to speak to Reece, but he would not exit the residence or respond.
Madison Police ERT again placed chemical agents inside the residence to force Reece from the residence, but received no response. Detective Eblen continued to negotiate with Reece, but again received no response. Madison Police ERT Officers, along with K9 Glock, made entry into the residence.
Once inside, ERT Officers found Reece concealed inside a bedroom with clothing and other items on top of him. ERT Officers were able to place Reece into handcuffs without further incident. Reece was then transported to the Jefferson County Jail. Once at the jail Reece was checked by medical staff for precautionary reasons.
Reece was arrested on three active warrants through Jefferson County Indiana. The Madison Police was assisted by the Jefferson County Sheriffs Department, City of Madison Fire Department, Kings Daughters Hospital, and the Salvation Army.
