Shortly before 8am on Tuesday morning (6/28/16), a county-wide dispatch was put out for officers in Dearborn County to attempt to located a white Dodge passenger car with a white male driver who was falling asleep at the wheel. The vehicle was last reported as traveling west on US 50 over Tanner’s Creek Bridge.
Several officers were in the area, looking for the vehicle.
A short time later, a crash was reported at State Road 48 and US 50.
Upon arrival by Lawrenceburg police officers, they noted the crash involved a white Dodge Intrepid.
Multiple witnesses stated that the Dodge Intrepid disregarded a red light for westbound traffic. The car continued into the intersection and struck a black Honda CRV turning east on U.S. 50 from S.R. 48 causing significant damage to both vehicles.
The driver of the CRV, a 40 yr old woman from Lawrenceburg was knocked unconscious from the impact and transported to Dearborn County Hospital for treatment by Lawrenceburg EMS. A 12 yr old passenger, also from Lawrenceburg, was transported to Dearborn County Hospital for treatment as well. Both occupants were treated and later released.
The driver of the Intrepid was identified as 25 yr old Michael A Phipps, also from Lawrenceburg. Phipps declined medical treatment at the scene of the crash.
Phipps has been charged with operating while intoxicated, a class A misdemeanor, and operating while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury, a level 6 felony. Phipps was also found to have an outstanding arrest warrant for possession of a narcotic drug, a level 6 felony.
The Lawrenceburg Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Lawrenceburg Fire Department, Lawrenceburg EMS, Dearborn County Sheriff’s Department and the Aurora Police Department.
The fact that a person has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
